ENERGIRON DRI Plant Performance Test completed at Baosteel in China

The sustainable hydrogen-based ENERGIRON Direct Reduction (DR) plant, jointly tested with Sinosteel Engineering & Technology Co., Ltd demonstrated the nominal production of DRI, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and marking a significant step in the green steel industry.

The innovative ENERGIRON technology, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, was recently tested at Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. plant in China. The plant, located in the Zhanjiang Economic and Technological Zone, Guangdong Province, produced 21,620 tonnes of direct reduced iron over 168 hours of continuous full-load operation, achieving a metallization rate above 94% using a 70% hydrogen-based reducing gas.

With a full capacity of 1 million tonnes per year and installed at Baosteel – a Baowu Group company – it will be China's largest hydrogen-based DRI facility. The plant is also equipped to capture CO2 for commercial use, further cutting emissions and creating an additional revenue stream.
