Our sustainability journey in milestones

1957

First commercially gas-based direct reduction plant in Mexico uses direct reduced iron to produce flat products via the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route.

1984

Stat-up of the first pilot operation of a direct reduction plant without external gas reformer.

1993

HYTEMP pneumatic transport system and hot direct reduced iron feeds Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).

1994

First DR plant to start yielding high carbon direct reduced iron, significantly increasing the quality of steel with carbon values ranging from 3.0 to 5.0%.

1998

Successful start-up of first commercial scale Zero Reformer (ZR) process direct reduction plant in Mexico.

2006

ENERGIRON conceived: Tenova HYL and Danieli Centro Metallics join forces to promote and accelerate the innovative technology for direct reduction plants
Successful start-up of first 1.6 MTPY ENERGIRON III process direct reduction plant in United Arab Emirates.

2009

First new generation ENERGIRON ZR direct reduction plant starts-up in Egypt.

2010

World’s largest direct reduction plant in a single module is supplied by ENERGIRON in the USA.

2023

Start-up of first direct reduction plant in China based on hydrogen-enriched coke oven gas.

2024

Start-up in China of first direct reduction plant using a flexible operating scheme based on natural gas, coke oven gas, and hydrogen as make-up gases.
